A writer, marketer, and producer and an architectural designer, respectively, Melissa and Chris Bruntlett are the founders of Modacity, a communications firm dedicated to “inspiring healthier, happier, simpler forms of mobility through words, photography, and film.” Looking specifically at how bicycles can meet these objectives, the authors focus on the Netherlands, the only country where bikes outnumber people. Drawing on interviews with planners and their own experiences cycling in five Dutch cities, the authors detail the challenges involved in integrating the bike into everyday life. They also tour several North American cities to show how metropolises including Atlanta, Seattle, and Vancouver are adapting Dutch ideas into their own transportation systems.
