Marshall won a Pulitzer for her biography of Margaret Fuller, and garnered the Francis Parkman Award for The Peabody Sisters. Her third book intertwines biography and memoir for a compelling and fresh look at the life of Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979). Drawing on newly discovered letters from Bishop to her psychiatrist and several lovers, Marshall lays out new details of Bishop’s childhood and her relationship with Lota de Macedo Soares and others. She beautifully complements this profile with her own impressions of Bishop as she knew her when she was a student in the poet’s workshop at Harvard in the 1970s.
