Meg Jacobs - Panic at the Pump: The Energy Crisis and the Transformation of American Politics in the 1970s

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

The 1973 Arab oil embargo set in motion a crisis whose most visible effect was miles-long lines at gas stations across the country; the most lasting consequence, however, was the government’s failure to take control of the situation and establish a policy for energy independence. In her analysis of the partisan debates over regulation and conservation, Jacobs, a research scholar at Princeton’s Wilson Center and the author of the award-winning Pocketbook Politics, draws lessons from the past to show how the country can avoid similar crises in the future.

Jacobs will be in conversation with Evan Thomas, author of many histories and biographies, most recently Being Nixon.
