Sycamore’s searing third novel evokes Boston’s gay culture in 1995 with a complexity and gritty realism that challenge any easy nostalgia for the 1990s. The story follows Alexa, a twenty-one-year-old queen recently relocated from San Francisco. She’d hoped to elude the traumas of her past, including the virus ravaging the gay community. Instead, she finds her life consumed in a dizzying cycle of prostitution and drugs. While chillingly evoking a time when desire and death were intertwined, Sycamore, awardwinning author of The End of San Francisco, also makes trenchant criticisms of today’s world, when, “our cities are…more homogenized, and gay culture is arguably even more deadening.”

Schulman’s new novel is a rich psychological portrait of the eponymous Maggie, a police detective and recovering addict, trying to put her life back together after a series of personal disasters and a stint in rehab. Though her main goal is to repair her relationship with her daughter, she’s thrown off balance first by the surreal, menacing new world of the Trump era, then by a sensational murder case that forces her to come to grips with pieces of her own past. Schulman, who has chronicled the lives of the marginalized in a stream of award-winning plays, essays, fiction, and screenplays, returns to her signature early themes of downtown New York, no-nonsense female characters, and complicated queer relationships.
