Matti Friedman - Spies of No Country: Secret Lives at the Birth of Israel

Before the Mossad, there was the Arab Section. Formed in 1948 when Israel’s existence hung in the balance, the group was comprised of Jews who had grown up in Arab lands and who could easily assume Arab identities while gathering intelligence and carrying out sabotage missions. At the outset of the 1948 War of Independence, the group numbered twelve; by the end, only seven remained. In this gripping history that doubles as a riveting spy story, Friedman, award-winning author of Pumpkinflowers and The Aleppo Codex, tells the stories of four of these brave men. Overlooked by history, during their own time these darker-skinned Jews were scorned by their European fellows, yet, as Friedman shows, their Middle Eastern roots and traditions are a fundamental part of Israel’s identity.
