Marion Winik: The Baltimore Book of the Dead — in conversation with Joyce Abell — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Saturday, October 13, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

In this thoroughly engaging memoir – a sequel to her beloved The Glen Rock Book of the Dead – Winik uses obituaries of friends, family, and more to recount her early years in New Jersey in the 1960s and the peregrinations that took her to Austin, Texas, rural Pennsylvania, and, finally, Baltimore. A longtime All Things Considered commentator, National Book Critics Circle board member, and award-winning writer, Winik introduces a set of vivid (and vividlynamed) characters – the Man Who Could Take Off His Thumb, the Babydaddy, the Warrior Poetess, El Suegro, and the Thin White Duke – presenting each with wit, respect, and an eye for idiosyncrasies. At the same time, she composes a rich narrative of the power of family and home, considers public events and nostalgia, and meditates on mourning and memory. Winik will be in conversation with Joyce Abell, author of Prickly Roses.
