Mallory O'Meara - The Lady from the Black Lagoon: Hollywood Monsters and the Lost Legacy of Milicent Patrick — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Friday, March 15, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

When O’Meara, a screenwriter, genre film producer, and co-host of the weekly literary podcast Reading Glasses, wanted to learn more about Milicent Patrick, the woman who created the Gill-man costume head for the eponymous Creature from the Black Lagoon, she came up empty-handed. Knowing only that Patrick had been one of Disney’s first female animators, she set out to discover the rest of the story—along with why it wasn’t better known. Her book profiles a fascinating, talented woman whose achievements, when not overlooked by men, were claimed by men. O’Meara’s compelling detective work restores a valuable chapter to film history, and also suggests there’s much about women’s roles in the film industry still to be uncovered.

This event is part of P&P's Film Series at Union Market, along with David Thomson with Sleeping with Strangers, Josh Frank with Giraffes on Horseback Salad, and Victoria Riskin with Fay Wray and Robert Riskin.

P&P is proud to partner with Angelika Pop-up to offer attendees the chance to win a night at the movies. At each Film Series event, you can enter a raffle for five movie passes to the Angelika with two large popcorns. You can enter the raffle once at each P&P Film Series event, so the more readings you attend, the better your chances!
