Maika and Maritza Moulite - Dear Haiti, Love Alaine — in conversation with Elizabeth Acevedo and Karine Jean-Pierre — at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Thursday, September 5, 2019 - 7:00pm

Alaine Beauparlant has plans: once high school ends, she’s leaving Miami to study journalism at Columbia. But before graduation, her world unravels. Her famous journalist mother has a meltdown on TV, and Alaine gets suspended. She is sent off to Haiti to join her tati and her recovering mother. For the first time, Alaine experiences the country in which her parents grew up. She also comes to know her estranged mother, ultimately learning the shocking truth about her public breakdown. The Moulite sisters’ combined voice, emphasized by the novel’s mixed-media format, crackles with independence and spark, vivifying this magical realist story, which pays homage both to a country often disregarded and to the joys of exploring one’s roots. In conversation with Elizabeth Acevedo, award-winning author of The Poet X and With the Fire on High, and Karine Jean-Pierre, Haitian-American political campaign organizer, Chief Public Affairs Officer at Move On and lecturer in international and public affairs at Columbia University. Ages 14 and up
