Mahogany L. Browne, Teri Ellen Cross Davis, Alexa Patrick, and Athena Dixon - Black Girl Magic: The BreakBeat Poets, Volume 2 — at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Saturday, September 22, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

The first volume of The BreakBeat Poets presented work by and for the Hip-Hop Generation, expanding the idea of what poetry is and who it’s for. The second volume of this urgent, diverse series features work by sixty-four of the most exciting young Black women writing today. It shatters the myth that hip-hop is a guys’ club, and, by giving space for black women’s “resilience and expansion,” is also “proof that magic exists. We are magic,” as Browne, one of the collection’s editors, says. Browne, author of books including Smudge and Redbone, and director of the poetry program of the Nuyorican Poets Café, wuill be joined for a reading and discussion by contributors Teri Ellen Cross Davis, author of the award-winning Haint and poetry coordinator for the Folger Shakespeare Library; Alexa Patrick, teaching artist for Split This Rock and the Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan University; and Athena Dixon, founder and editor in chief of Linden Avenue Literary Journal.
