Lynne Kelly - Song for a Whale—at Takoma Park Library (MD)

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, February 5, 2019 - 7:30pm

Twelve-year-old Iris is an electronics whiz—she’s always felt happiest when she’s tinkering with wires and vacuum tubes. School, on the other hand, has never been as fun. Being Deaf doesn’t slow her down, but being the only Deaf student in her classes makes it hard to communicate with her peers and teachers. But one day, Iris learns about Blue 55, the loneliest whale in the world, who sings at a frequency unintelligible to all other whales and is doomed to swim companionless as a result. Iris immediately feels connected to the creature, and hatches a plan to create a song that Blue 55 can hear and know that he’s not alone. With her Deaf grandmother by her side, Iris sets out on a road trip to Alaska, to find Blue 55 and play her song. Ages 8-12.

American Sign Language interpretation will be provided at this event and is being sponsored by the MD/DE/WV Region of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.
