Lopez D. Matthews Jr - Howard University in the World Wars: Men and Women Serving the Nation; & Gil Klein - Trouble in Lafayette Square: Assassination, Protest & Murder at the White House

Upcoming Event
Saturday, January 12, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

In Howard University in the World Wars (History Press, $23.99) historian and archivist Lopez D. Matthews draws on a collection of letters sent by Howard students and alumni to the university to give an illuminating look at how the school’s students responded to the call for service in both World Wars. Many of the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II were trained first at Howard. Following the larger currents of history by tracing incidents of Trouble in Lafayette Square (History Press, $21.99), Gil Klein, a writer and American University journalism professor, looks at various demonstrations and acts of violence that have taken place on this iconic seven-acre public park, from the shooting of Francis Scott Key’s son to an attempt by Puerto Rican nationalists to assassinate President Truman.
