Leonard Pitts, Jr. - The Last Thing You Surrender: A Novel of World War II — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Saturday, February 9, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Awarded the 2004 Pulitzer for Commentary, Pitts is a nationally syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald as well as the acclaimed author of Grant Park, Freeman, and Before I Forget. His fourth novel unfolds during the Second World War, vividly conveying battle-fronts in Europe, the Pacific, and the American South. Intertwining three narratives, the novel follows a white marine consumed by guilt over surviving Pearl Harbor when so many—a black shipmate in particular—did not; a young black woman left widowed by the December 7th attack, who finds uneasy comfort in a segregated Alabama shipyard; and a member of the all-black 761st Tank Battalion struggling with his ambivalence about fighting for the country where his parents were lynched.
