In The Scar Boys (Egmont), Harry’s extended college application essay explains the lightning strike that scarred him at age eight and made him the target of school bullies—until he met Johnny and the two formed a band. Successful and sought after, Harry writes about music, gigs, and life on the road, much of which Vlahos experienced himself as guitarist for a mid-1980s punk band. Vlahos will have that guitar with him at P&P. Ages 13 and up.

In Guitar Notes (Egmont), Trip is too introverted to make friends. He spends all his time with his guitar, until his mother takes it away to force him to be social. Lyla is a cello prodigy but enjoys music less and less the more her family pushes her to succeed. When the two share a practice room at school they get to know and help each other, bonded by music and then, love. Ages 13 and up.
