“I don’t want to spare you any pain,” the poet declares to her fourteen-year-old self, as she prepares to tell the girl what the world has in store for her. “I want the unbroken woman you will be to exist.” Awarded the 2016 Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize, Swearingen-Steadwell’s second collection is a compelling and moving set of stories and cautionary tales. The poems combine fierce self-awareness with an acute sense of the socio-cultural moment to show what it’s like to come of age as a woman of color today.

The daughter of a cellist and a pianist, Hollander grew up with Mozart’s Requiem in D and Chopin’s Nocturne and Elegy in C, and the minor tone of these works haunts her first full-length collection of poems. Much of the book focuses on the poet’s fragile and volatile mother, whose “little wrists” were as capable of “leading the long bow” as they were of “hurl[ing] a dish at” her daughter. As Hollander both comes to terms with the woman she couldn’t save and establishes her own artistic voice, she turns to a poetic father figure, writing a series of haunting poems after Rimbaud.

Biele, editor of a compilation of Elizabeth Bishop’s correspondence with The New Yorker staff, made her poetry debut with the finely-detailed lyrics of White Summer, winner of the Crab Orchard Review First Book Award, and turned to an intimate chronicle of parenthood for her second collection, Broom, winner of the Bordighera Poetry Prize. Her latest collection draws on historical documents to follow the lives of three women who left home in search of new adventures. A distinctive and compelling collage, these poems blend newspaper accounts, court records, letters, and a glossary of terms for a rich look at both individual lives and the way life was lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
