Laura Smith - The Art of Vanishing: A Memoir of Wanderlust — in conversation with Robert Downey

Upcoming Event
Saturday, February 10, 2018 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

A hybrid memoir/mystery, Smith’s compelling book looks at marriage from several angles. On the eve of her own, she had cold feet, but not from any doubts about her husband-to-be. Rather, she worried about losing her individuality in a role that demanded conformity. As she reflected on questions of personal autonomy and social expectations, she became intrigued by the story of Barbara Newhall Follett. Born in 1914 and decidedly unconventional, Follett published her first novel when she was twelve, later worked on a schooner, and was one of the first women to hike the Appalachian Trail. Then, in December 1939, after six years in an increasingly unhappy marriage, she disappeared without a trace. A role model? A cautionary tale?

Smith will be in conversation with Robert Downey, editor and literary agent.
