Eleven-year-old Kofi lives a peaceful life in his 19th century West African village of Upper Kwanta, with dreams for the future. When Kofi’s brother is chosen to represent the village at the Kings Festival in a wrestling contest, things go terribly wrong when he accidentally kills Prince Yaw Boateng, the nephew of the rival village’s king. Life turns upside-down, and soon nothing about his life is the same. This novel in verse follows Kofi as everything he has ever known turns into a journey of horror in the Middle Passage as he is sent through The Door of No Return.
