Katie Arnold - Running Home: A Memoir — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, April 14, 2019 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

When Arnold was seven, her father, National Geographic photographer David Arnold, encouraged her to run a 10K race. Since then, running and her father have been inextricably connected for Arnold—all the more so since her father’s death in 2010. In her moving memoir, Arnold, a contributing editor to Outside, revisits her childhood and, from the vantage point of her own experiences as a parent, struggles to come to terms with her father’s ambivalence about his family. But more than memories or reading her father’s diaries, running—not just light jogs, but ultramarathons—helped Arnold come to grips with a grief that at times threatened to overwhelm her. Her book is at once a powerful evocation of a complicated father-daughter bond and a first-hand look at the psychic benefits of extreme sports.
