Things are tough for Matthew—his dad is working overseas as a journalist, his mom has moved his 100-year-old great grandmother in to live with them, and like everyone else, he’s living through a global pandemic. He feels worn out and alone.
But an old photo in his great-grandmother’s belongings intrigues Matthew. Bit by bit, he convinces her to share her past, leading to an understanding of an old family secret. With timelines alternating between present day United States and 1930s Soviet Union, The Lost Year introduces readers to the Holodomor – the famine that killed millions of Ukrainians, along with an underlying family mystery.
