Juliet Grames - The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna — in conversation with Dolen Perkins-Valdez — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Thursday, May 9, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

As the title of Grames’s powerful debut novel indicates, several questions surround Stella Fortuna. What is the secret behind the many near-death experiences that caused people in the Italian village where she grew up to consider her cursed? What came between her and her younger sister after the family emigrated to the U.S. just before World War II? Stella is an elderly woman when the novel opens, and as a younger relative pieces together her story, Grames, associate publisher and curator of the Soho Crime imprint, unsettlingly shows the lengths to which a family will go to repress what it can’t accept, even as she reveals ways to discuss harsh realities—racism, patriarchy—that previous generations stayed silent about. Grames will be in conversation with novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez, author of Wench and Balm.
