Julie Salamon - An Innocent Bystander: The Killing of Leon Klinghoffer

Upcoming Event
Sunday, June 23, 2019 - 1:00pm

In her comprehensive account of the 1985 Achille Lauro hijacking and its aftermath, Salamon details the takeover of the cruise ship by Palestinian Fedayeen, the shooting of Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled Jewish New Yorker, the hunt for the killers, and the protracted diplomatic negotiations between the U.S. Egypt, Italy, and Israel. A former journalist and author of books including Hospital and Wendy and the Lost Boys, Salamon draws on interviews with most of the living participants, including Klinghoffer’s daughters and one of the hijackers, shifting among perspectives to illuminate both the incident’s specific human costs and its place in the wider history of global terrorism.
