Juan Gabriel Vásquez - The Shape of the Ruins — in conversation with Jonathan Yardley — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Saturday, October 6, 2018 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Vásquez, winner of the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award for The Sound of Things Falling, is one of Colombia’s leading contemporary writers. His new novel combines history, autobiography, and a keen sense of today’s political atmosphere for a penetrating exploration of the dark sides of a nation and an individual. Epic in scope, the narrative opens in a museum with the attempted theft of the bullet-ridden suit a Colombian politician was wearing when he was assassinated. This bungled crime is the catalyst for a chain of conspiracy theories, political manipulations, and literary investigations, and the novel becomes by turns a murder mystery, a historical drama, and a political exposé. Vásquez has produced a profound study of national crisis as well as a compelling portrait of obsession. Vásquez will be in conversation with Jonathan Yardley, Pulitzer Prize-winning former book critic at The Washington Post.
