John Burgess - The Stairway Guide's Daughter

Upcoming Event
Sunday, November 19, 2017 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Burgess, a former Washington Post correspondent, has long been fascinated with Southeast Asia and its great stone temples. He’s written historical and fictional treatments of Angkor Wat, and now follows his history of the Preah Vihear Temple, Temple in the Clouds, with a vivid imagining of 12th-century Cambodia. Set in the golden age of Angkor civilization and evoking the grandeur of both the architecture and the faith it embodies, the novel focuses on Jorani, a young woman who guides pilgrims up the temple’s two thousand-step stairway. But the sacred site is beset with worldly troubles, and Jorani is unwittingly involved in a succession struggle that forces her to choose between her family and the abbot’s son.
