When George Washington ended his second term as president, he published a farewell message in a newspaper. In his third book, Avlon, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast, a CNN political analyst, and author of Independent Nation, shows that this wise and thoughtful message is still as relevant as it was in 1796. A substantive restatement of the country’s founding principles, it was for many years more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence. In it, mindful of the new nation’s fragility, Washington reminded citizens and future statesmen to beware partisanship, debt, and foreign wars. He advocated independence, not isolation, and encouraged religious pluralism and education.
