Jodie Patterson - The Bold World: A Memoir of Family and Transformation — in conversation with Leslie Hall — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Monday, February 18, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

This event was rescheduled to this date from its original date of Wednesday, February 13.

In her powerful family memoir, Patterson, a social activist, writer, and founder of the beauty companies Doobop and Georgia, speaks eloquently and forcefully as the mother of a transgender child. The subject of a widely viewed 2016 video created by Cosmopolitan, Patterson was moved to reconsider everything she thought she knew about identity, gender, and parenting when her three-year-old protested that he was not a girl. While the family unconditionally accepted Penel, Patterson observed how similar the thoughtlessness or rejection her child experienced were to the racial bias she had endured in the 1970s. An honest, at times heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring story of love, Patterson’s book shows why she was named the #1 Most Influential Mom of 2018 by Family Circle.

Patterson will be in conversation with Leslie Hall, associate director of the Human Rights Campaign’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities Program.
