Jo Giese - Never Sit If You Can Dance: Lessons from My Mother — in conversation with Sally Quinn

Upcoming Event
Saturday, May 11, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Giese’s endearing profile of her mother is made up of a series of personal essays that are by turns lighthearted, serious, and elegiac. A paean to a bygone era when civility was the order of the day—as were rigid gender roles—the book focuses on the irrepressible woman known as Babe. Giese’s mother loved to dance, drink, and stay up late. She made the most of every moment and thrived well into her late nineties. Her spirit infuses Giese’s writing, which is full of vivid period details about fashions, furnishings, and embroidery, as well as insightful reflections on manners and attitudes. Giese, a writer teacher, community activist, and award-winning radio journalist for Marketplace, will be in conversation with Sally Quinn, whose most recent book is the memoir Finding Magic.
