Jennifer S. Hirsch and Shamus Khan - Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus

Upcoming Event

In 2017 the Sexual Health Initiative to Foster Transformation (SHIFT)—a research initiative begun at Columbia in 2015—released a shocking report revealing that one in three women at Columbia experience sexual assault by the end of their senior year. Hirsch and Khan, leaders of the ethnographic team of SHIFT, draw on the project’s findings to present a new, scientifically rigorous perspective on the problem of campus sexual assault. Moving away from cultural criticism and personal accounts, the authors introduce the concepts of sexual projects, sexual citizenship, and sexual geographies; rather than debate consent or the dangers of hooking up, they emphasize the roots of sexual assault and frame the issue as a public health problem.
