Jean-Baptiste del Amo - Animalia — in conversation with Carol Volk — at Politics and Prose at Union Market, in partnership with the French Embassy

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, September 25, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Del Amo is one of France’s most exciting young writers as well as a prominent voice for animal rights, and his first novel to appear in English is an impassioned epic in the naturalistic vein of Zola. Tracing a century of socio-cultural change through the lives of a farming family in southwestern France, the novel opens in 1898 in Puy-Larroque where Éléonore lives with her parents and cousin on a farm that lacks running water. But World War I marks the end of pastoral traditions both good and bad, and by the time Éléonore assumes the role of matriarch in the 1980s, her family is running a large efficient factory farm, with all the inhumanity that entails. In partnership with the French Embassy.
