Jared Yates Sexton - The Man They Wanted Me to Be: Toxic Masculinity and a Crisis of Our Own Making — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Based on his provocative New York Times op-ed piece on toxic masculinity, Sexton’s book combines memoir and analysis for an unsparing look at the consequences to both individuals and society of America’s deep-seated patriarchal culture. Sexton, author of The People Are Going to Rise like the Waters Upon Your Shore, uses his own working-class upbringing as a lens for viewing the larger history of the roles boys have been expected to fill. The decline of industry, the rise of feminism, and other socio-economic changes have made such roles outdated—as well as dangerous. While the #MeToo movement reflects traditional masculinity’s toxic threat to women, Sexton’s accounts of depression, shortened lives, and suicide show the steep toll it takes on men on as well.
