Jami Attenberg - Saint Mazie

Wednesday, June 10, 2015 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Attenberg’s short fiction and three novels, especially her boisterous The Middlesteins, earned praise for the author’s vivid storytelling and unforgettable characters.  But while Edie Middlestein only seemed real, Mazie Phillips-Gordon, protagonist of Attenberg’s fourth novel, was an actual figure. Known as “Queen of the Bowery,” Mazie was born poor, worked hard, and liked a good time. She ran the Venice movie house and during the Depression helped the many who were down on their luck.
