James McBride - Deacon King Kong

Upcoming Event
Thursday, March 12, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

An accomplished musician as well as the author of the classic memoir The Color of Water and the National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird, McBride infuses every word of his eagerly awaited new novel—the first in seven years—with his signature rhythmic prose, dynamic storytelling, and sheer passion. Set in Brooklyn in 1969, the narrative leaps into action with Sportcoat, a Baptist preacher, shooting Deems, a young drug dealer, in the courtyard of the Case House project. As news of the killing spreads, the community’s residents tell stories of their own experiences of racism and the rising scourge of drugs and fill in the details explaining how Deems and Sportcoat came to their dramatic showdown.

An Update on P&P's Event Procedures

Given the DC Health Advisory’s recommendation that we limit gatherings with large crowds, as well as the importance of social distancing at this time, we’re implementing new measures for tonight’s event with James McBride. We also plan to Livestream tonight’s event beginning at 7 p.m. if you'd prefer to watch from home. Tune in at: www.youtube.com/politicsprose.

We’ll minimize physical contact between the author and attendees. To that end, we’re eliminating signing lines and instead McBride will sign books in advance to be sold after the event. We’re disinfecting event areas with additional frequency.

The audience will be capped at 100 guests with seating available on a first come, first served basis. There will be no standing room. We’ve adjusted our seating layout to ensure more distance between attendees.

If you arrive at the event and it’s already reached capacity, you're welcome to purchase a signed copy of the book at our cash registers.

We appreciate your cooperation, support, and understanding as we make these changes to our usual procedures. P&P values our role as a hub for DC's literary community, and we're committed to finding new ways to connect with our customers in these challenging times.

Please check the events calendar on P&P’s website for up-to-date information on cancellations. If you have specific questions regarding events, please call our stores or email events@politics-prose.com
