James Atlas - The Shadow in the Garden: A Biographer's Tale

Upcoming Event
Friday, September 1, 2017 - 7:30pm to 8:30pm

Atlas founded the Penguin Lives series and his book interweaves memoir and literary history for a rich portrait of the biographer’s art. Always interested in the people behind the great novels, Atlas, who has written acclaimed biographies of Delmore Schwartz and Saul Bellow, found his calling after studying with Richard Ellmann at Oxford. Along with a profile of his mentor, he surveys the lives and works of the genre’s originators and traces its history through the Renaissance and the Victorian Era to today, giving insight into how biographers choose their subjects, how they manage sources who invent recollections, and how the literary biographer reads and incorporates a subject’s work into the life story.
