Ian Buruma - Their Promised Land: My Grandparents in Love and War

Monday, February 1, 2016 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Buruma’s classics The Wages of Guilt and Year Zero chronicled the global devastation of world war; in this biography of his grandparents, the frequent New York Review of Books contributor and Luce Professor of democracy, human rights, and journalism at Bard College shows how armed conflict affects individuals. The Bernard-Winifred romance began in London, broke off under the weight of parental disapproval and Bernard’s service in France, then resumed for sixty years of marriage. As assimilated Jews in Britain, the couple felt insecure during World War II; nonetheless, they helped Jewish children escape Nazi Germany.
