Hendrik Meijer - Arthur Vandenberg: The Man in the Middle of the American Century — in conversation with James Kirchick — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, January 31, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

When Arthur Vandenberg (1884-1951) assumed his seat as the Republican senator for Michigan in 1928, he was an outspoken opponent of the New Deal and a staunch isolationist. By the end of his life, he was not just a supporter of NATO and the U.N., but one of the key architects of American post-war foreign policy. In this comprehensive biography, Meijer, a reporter, editor, and executive producer of the documentary America's Senator: The Unexpected Odyssey of Arthur Vandenberg, charts the statesman’s sea change from a partisan politician to an effective consensus-builder and all but asks, what would Vandenberg do in today’s divisive political landscape?

Meijer will be in conversation with James Kirchick, a journalist, Brookings Fellow, and author of The End of Europe.
