Returning to fiction after two books of nonfiction, most recently The Girl at the Baggage Claim, Jen in her new novel gives a vividly imagined picture of the world of the near future. Known as AutoAmerica, the country is governed by AI algorithms and the unhappy society is divided between Netters, privileged and fair-skinned, and the darker-toned Surplus whose only duty is to consume. Focusing on a Surplus family, the novel follows Gwen, a gifted athlete who plays baseball for the Resisters league her parents organized. But when AutoAmerica rejoins the Olympics, Gwen is suddenly valuable to the state and her honorary Netter status complicates, but doesn’t stop, her family’s agitation for Surplus rights. Jen will be in conversation with Jane Leavy, former Washington Post sportswriter and author most recently of The Big Fella.
