In her latest novel, Apostol, winner of the PEN Open Book Award and two-time winner of the National Book Award in the Philippines, pulls out all the literary stops to chart the repercussions of an especially bloody chapter of the Philippine-American War. When forty-eight Americans were killed in the 1901 Balangiga massacre in Samar, U.S. troops retaliated by massacring between 5,000 and 50,000 Filipinos, depending on who you ask. The truth is still contested decades later when an American woman is making a film about the incident from the perspective of a white photographer. Her translator rewrites the script to convey the experiences of a Filipino schoolteacher. Apostol gives us both versions along with an intricate tapestry of the voices of the many women who were involved in the war. Kaleidoscopic and deeply affecting, the novel probes the truth in ways unavailable to conventional histories.
