Gayle Wald - It's Been Beautiful: Soul! and Black Power Television

Sunday, June 28, 2015 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

More than just another variety show, Soul!, which ran from 1968 to 1973, was the first public television  program to focus on African American culture, politics, and identity. In her history and assessment of this innovative programming, Wald, author of a life of Sister Rosetta Tharpe and a professor of English and American studies at George Washington, considers the impact of the show, with its dynamic producer and frequent host, Ellis Haizlip, and the sense of national black community it helped build.
