Erica Dawson - When Rap Spoke Straight to God — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, November 13, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

One sustained long poem, Dawson’s mesmerizing third book uses a wide range of literary traditions and styles to present issues of blackness, the boundaries of gender and race, Trump-era politics, and pop culture in ways we’ve never seen before. She samples hip-hop lyrics and embeds them in sonnets, builds powerful resistance lyrics from blank verse, and celebrates sensuality in rich sestinas. Director of the low-residency MFA program at the University of Tampa, Dawson won the 2006 Anthony Hecht Prize for Big-Eyed Afraid and the 2016 Poets' Prize for The Small Blades Hurt.
