Erica Armstrong Dunbar - Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge

Upcoming Event
Saturday, March 18, 2017 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

In her revelatory story of George Washington as a slaveholder, Dunbar, Blue and Gold Professor of Black American Studies and History at the University of Delaware and author of A Fragile Freedom, tells the story of a truly exceptional woman. Ona Judge (c. 1773-1848), a personal servant to Martha Washington, escaped during the First Family’s sojourn in Philadelphia in the 1790s—one of the rare female fugitives in a time when 90% of escaped slaves were men. Though the Washingtons never stopped trying to get her back, Judge lived out her life as a free woman in New Hampshire--which didn’t outlaw slavery until 1857—supported by the wider community of African Americans.
