Eric A. Posner - The Twilight of Human Rights Law & Michael Boylan - Natural Human Rights: A Theory

Saturday, November 15, 2014 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

While the language of human rights is everywhere, what exactly does it mean? In The Twilight of Human Rights Law (Oxford), Posner, the University of Chicago professor and frequent commentator on international and constitutional law, looks at various treaties and statutes, pointing to broad but vague definitions of “common good” that, combined with limited resources for enforcement, guarantee the failure of such measures. In Natural Human Rights: A Theory (Cambridge), Boylan, a philosopher and novelist, draws on Western and Chinese beliefs, presenting them in four narratives reminiscent of parables to frame an argument that human rights are on a continuum with natural law.
