Jose Martí was a freedom fighter, and his weapons were the pen and the sword. While his life was finite, his words and ideas live on. This bilingual book tells Martí’s story as a Cuban poet, writer, and nationalist leader. Martí’s commitment to Cuban emancipation grew from his early experiences. Although he traveled the world, rallying for the cause of Cuban independence, the spirit of his home country never left him. Martí’s poetic verse is sprinkled throughout the book, injecting traces of the romantic Cuban landscape that Martí loved, from the palmas reales to the saltwater sea to the crowing roosters.
