On June 25, 1980, two young women hitchhiking to the Rainbow Gathering festival, were killed in an isolated clearing in nearby Pocahontas County, West Virginia. Thirteen years later, a local farmer was convicted of the murders—only to be released shortly after, when a known serial killer and diagnosed schizophrenic confessed to the crime. In her compelling account of this story, Eisenberg, a widely published writer and reporter, draws on five years of exhaustive research to retrace the investigations, profile key figures involved, and recreate the courtroom scenes, all while showing how the killings haunted—even traumatized—the local community, shaping the lives and fates of people of several generations. Eisenberg will be in conversation with Michelle Delgado, a D.C.-based writer, editor, and researcher.
