Ellen Cassedy - On the Landing: Stories by Yenta Mash — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, October 7, 2018 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Yenta Mash (1922–2013), an award-winning fiction writer, grew up in what is now Moldova, but was then a polyglot center of Jewish culture. After seven years in the Soviet gulag, she immigrated to Israel in 1977, and began publishing short stories in Yiddish journals on both sides of the Atlantic. Available in English for the first time, these sixteen stories draw on Mash’s experience to powerfully convey geographic and emotional upheavals, political turbulence, and the phases of a woman’s life. This ground-breaking volume is translated by Ellen Cassedy, a playwright, novelist, and co-translator of Blume Lempel’s Oedipus in Brooklyn and Other Stories, winner of the 2012 Translation Award from the Yiddish Book Center.
