Elizabeth Spires - A Memory of the Future: Poems & Michael Collier - My Bishop and Other Poems

Upcoming Event
Sunday, September 16, 2018 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Elegant and reflective, the poems of Spires’s seventh collection focus on timeless questions of identity, memory, and aging. Grounded in Zen meditativeness, Asian art, and the concrete realities of everyday life in Manhattan and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, the book uses houses as both landmarks and metaphors as the poet, a professor at Goucher College, seeks to define the boundary between the inner and outer selves.

In his latest collection the former Maryland Poet Laureate turns variously to lyrics, prose poems, and collages of personal memories and public events, exploring the impact of trauma on our deepest sensibilities. The powerful title poem recalls Collier’s early spirituality, his friendship with the Bishop of Phoenix, Arizona, and the pedophiliac priest the Bishop failed to save him from. In other pieces, Collier, a member of the creative writing faculty at the University of Maryland and the director of the Bread Loaf Writers’ conference, reflects on Thomas Jefferson’s bees, Huey Newton’s trial, and his parents’ funerals.
