Dennis Baron - What's Your Pronoun?: Beyond He and She

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, February 5, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

From Shakespeare’s use of the singular “they” and women suffrage activists’ reference to a generic “he” to assert the right to vote to today’s debates over they, zie, hir and non-binary terms in general, pronouns have played a central role in defining rights and identities. In this wide-ranging history, Baron, professor emeritus of English and linguistics at the University of Illinois and a long-time national commentator on language issues, canvases primary sources from 1782 to the present, documenting shifts in terminology and illuminating how they reflect changing attitudes to gender.
