David Goldfield - The Gifted Generation: When Government Was Good

Upcoming Event
Friday, November 17, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Thanks in large part to an activist federal government, the years following World War II saw unprecedented economic growth in this country, and this prosperity was matched with progress on many social and environmental issues. Goldfield, the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, focuses on the presidencies of Truman, Eisenhower, and Johnson, showing that what lay behind their landmark programs on education, housing, and equal opportunities was the commonwealth ideal: the belief that federal legislation could encourage individual opportunity and, ultimately, create a better nation for everyone.
