David Ebenbach - Miss Portland and Jessie Chaffee - Florence in Ecstasy

Upcoming Event
Sunday, June 4, 2017 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

In his first novel, Ebenbach, winner of the 2016 Orison Fiction Prize and Fiction Vice President at the Washington Writers Publishing House, follows Zoe as she abruptly abandons the life she’s made in Philadelphia to start afresh in Maine. Things look promising when she meets a man planning to open a mindfulness center. But when difficulties arise—with his family, with members of the community, with the enterprise itself—Zoe feels caught in the cycle that led to similar failures in the past. As desperation fuels a kind of mania, she’s forced to wonder if the answer is to try harder or to try something else entirely.

In her powerful debut novel, Chaffee, an editor at Words without Borders, follows a troubled young American woman from Boston to Florence, where she hopes to heal after a devastating struggle with starvation. For Hannah, Florence is as severely spiritual as it is richly sensuous. She’s surrounded by images of female beauty, ranging from icons to Old Master paintings to the lithe athletic bodies of her new friends at the rowing club. Hannah’s new self-image is fragile, but holding, until she meets someone from her past life, and her balance is thrown off once again.
