David Downie - A Passion for Paris: Romanticism and Romance in the City of Light

Saturday, May 9, 2015 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Downie, who chronicled his unique take on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage in Paris to the Pyrenees, here writes of his ongoing infatuation with Paris and its ambience-steeped cultural heritage. On a quest to understand “romantic” in all its senses, Downie starts with La Bohème, Baudelaire, and Nadar and guides readers through the great 19th- and 20th-century artists and artworks associated with Romanticism.

Downie will be in conversation with Janet Hulstrand, who has taught American literature in Paris for the City University of New York every summer since 1997, and teaches at Politics & Prose as well.
