David DeSteno - Emotional Success: The Power of Gratitude, Compassion, and Pride

Upcoming Event
Friday, January 12, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

In this innovative look at achievement, DeSteno, a professor of psychology at Northeastern University and director of the school’s Social Emotions Group, draws from his groundbreaking work on the role of emotions in moral behavior to show how gratitude, compassion, and pride can be more effective than will-power in helping us succeed. Having evolved specifically to blunt our need for immediate gratification, these three prosocial emotions not only foster self-control and resilience, they last longer than will-power does, get stronger with use, and can even have similar beneficial effects on others. As he shows how these emotions work, DeSteno, editor-in-chief of the American Psychological Association’s journal Emotion and author of The Truth about Trust, also offers tips on how to harness their power at work, on the job, in sports, and at home.
