David Biespiel - The Education of a Young Poet — in conversation with Lia Purpura

Upcoming Event
Sunday, January 7, 2018 - 3:00pm to 4:00pm

Biespiel’s heartfelt and spirited memoir/ars poetica is proof that the developing writer, no less than the seasoned artist, is one on whom nothing is wasted. While he was fascinated with language from the first, Biespiel, now The Rumpus “Poetry Wire” columnist and the award-winning author of five collections of poetry, came to writing slowly, discovering the mystery and power of Latin in high school and reading poets like Heaney and Bonnefoy in college. Extra-literary influences also inspired him, and he traces his vocation back to his great-grandfather’s 1910 migration from Ukraine, political rhetoric, and the invaluable lessons about discipline, training, and patience he learned as a competitive diver. Biespiel will be in conversation with Lia Purpura, poet, translator, and author most recently of the collection It Shouldn’t Have Been Beautiful.
