Darrell M. West - The Future of Work: Robots, AI, and Automation — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Monday, June 4, 2018 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

The transition from an industrial to a digital economy is happening right now, and as AI, driverless cars, and robotics become more common, they transform all facets of society and have a particularly strong impact on employment. Because work will no longer mean what it once did, West argues that society needs to reconceive of the very concept of jobs. This requires modifying the whole social contract, and West, vice president of the Governance Studies program at the Brookings Institution, offers a number of specific ways to accomplish this, such as broadening the concept of employment to include volunteering and parenting, valuing leisure time differently, and understanding identity in terms other than those of paid employment.
